We became independent in 1947. We freed ourselves of the British. We freed ourselves of slavery. We won liberty and autonomy for India. However, to me freedom means a lot more than that. Let us pause for a moment and ponder what freedom means to each one of us and how we can achieve it ...

Often we see that people in India work on measly wages, which are not enough to provide good nutrition to a person. I realize that in US, it does not happen. Given that a person is employed, he can at least eat a good meal. Why? Because, laws in US force 'a minimum wage' to be paid to that person ...

In Mahatma Gandhi's words - "Men often become what they believe themselves to be. If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it even if I didn't have it in the beginning." Right there in his words lay the definitions of a pessimist and an optimist. Now, I am sure you will agree that we can do with more optimists in India. The poised India should change into Advantage India ...

How will Indian industry and development react if we lose the major share of Back Office Providers to Brazil, Russia, Ireland, Poland, China, Ukraine or may be Zambia? Yes, Zambia too. Recently, I was reading a talk given at Sloan School of Management, MIT . "Why not Zambia?", where they were comparing that Zambia may be an even cheaper option. Will the bubble burst or are we in a good enough shape to sustain such a challenge? ...

I thought to myself, "Here we have a problem that resides in me, and to some extent or the other, resides in more than a billion of my countrymen. This means that I have a lot of work to do. I have to increase awareness in myself and in my fellow countrymen." But I asked myself, .Unless I become a model citizen myself, how would I be able to honestly and with a clear conscience, expect others to appreciate and act on my message?" ...

We must use a similar attitude and strategy when we look at the larger problems facing our country. Rather than looking at these issues as problems of immense magnitude that cannot be solved. We must look at them as a challenge that must be tackled one step at a time. The key points to remember are 1) We must make the start, because otherwise, it will be impossible to achieve any result, and 2) We can tackle the smaller challenges first, before tackling the larger challenges or obstacles in the future ...

An able individual can only take able responsibilities when an opportunity strikes. Now, that the opportunities are there, the affirmative action in India should also focus on developing such able individuals. ...

On August 15, 1947, Pt. Nehru made his "tryst with destiny" speech. Today, once again, India is at a point where we should make a tryst with destiny — that we will develop India. We are well poised for it, but we have to generate a final thrust — a wave that will capture the entire nation into one ...

Most of the domestic workers encounter a multi-faceted poverty. Historically, the domestic workers belong to the poorest families. The parents are unable to earn enough to support food for the family. They are themselves illiterate and do not qualify for better jobs. These people tend to take domestic cleaning, laundry etc jobs. Now at these measly wages they can work everyday 8 hours a day and still be poor ...
